There are three things (one item and two enchants) to enhance skill: Unlike Herbalism, Mining is not improved by any Classic racial abilities. Although you can purchase a basic 6-slot Small Brown Pouch for from several vendors, it's worth finding a tailor who might be willing to make you some bags in exchange for the materials to make them or checking the Auction House for Linen Bag. Make sure to invest early income on bags. Second, ore isn't the only thing you get from mining nodes, so you'll find bag space filling up fast. (Important: there are several items you will see that also "function as a mining pick", but this item property change did not occur until Burning Crusade).
